Samsung officially launched the Galaxy Z Fold 3 at the Samsung Unpacked event held on 11th August 2021, with a lot of cool stuff to offer. Let’s get into it!
S Pen Support, Water Resistance and Under-Display Camera!
The most impressive part of this generation of the Z Fold is water resistance. The phone has an IPX8 certification for water resistance which means it can be submerged into water up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes and stay completely damage-free.
The phone now has S-Pen support and while that’s great, I do have some thoughts which I’ll get into later in this blog. It comes with an S Pen specifically designed for it. Neither will this work on other Galaxy devices nor will other S Pens work with the Z Fold 3. The cover display does not support the S Pen.
Just like the Z Flip 3, there is no dust resistance on the Z Fold 3 as well due to its hinge.
The design of the phone is now considerably stronger thanks to what Samsung calls “Armor Aluminum”, its “toughest, strongest aluminium frame” yet.
The 7.6-inch main screen now has a protection film that’s 805 stronger and 29% brighter than its predecessor. The 6.2-inch cover-screen is also 29% brighter and also sports a 120Hz refresh rate.
The rear cameras have remained unchanged from the previous generation with a 12MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The 10MP selfie camera on the cover screen is also the same sensor as before.
The real star of the show here is the second selfie camera present under the display of the main display.
The battery is a little smaller than the Z Fold 2 at 4,400 mAh and fast charging speeds still max out at 25W.
Other features include a side fingerprint sensor mounted on the power button and stereo speakers.
The phone houses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, which is a real powerhouse with 12GB of RAM. It also comes with options of 256GB or 512GB storage.
You can now pin the slide over apps to the side, essentially acting as a dock seen on Macs.
The phone comes in three different colours.
What is it priced at and When will it be available?
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is priced at a hefty $1799 for the base variant (12GB + 256GB) and $1899 for the 12GB + 512GB variant.
Pre-orders start today and the phone will be available to customers starting 27th August 2021.
What are my thoughts?
While the under-display photo is still in its first generation and not much can be expected from it, early photos show very poor performance from the camera. There is also a lot of pixelation seen in the area where the camera is present. I can’t fully fault Samsung as this technology is still being developed, but thought this was something worth mentioning.
The S Pen - while it’s a great feature, I feel that this cannot be a replacement for the Note series which we haven’t seen in a while. Having a specific S Pen and having to buy a specific case to carry around the pen seems like a big pain.
Being able to pin apps to the right side of the phone, essentially creating a dock is an absolutely brilliant feature and this will really, really help with multitasking.
At the end of the day, I am really impressed with the engineering behind this device but my question is - who’s really going to shell out $1800 for a bulky machine like this?
